GiveBIG is approaching on May 6th and 7th! Every year, generous donations help fuel our annual operating budget. This year, we're acknowledging that your gifts also nourish community care.
Food banks have always been about more than just food. We share resources or smiles that come with encouraging words. We swap stories and knowledge, from recipes to simple life hacks. Our neighbors gather to forge solutions and foster hope.
Dry and canned goods are significant to our neighbors. With stable shelf lives, these foods create multiple meals, feed more people, and make fresh foods like peppers, tomatoes, and onions, or meat go farther. We're experiencing a limited supply of these foods for our community. By making a donation or shopping our wish list, you can help stock our shelves.
Volunteer Opportunity: Bag-Packing for Home Delivery
In 2024, 750 families received weekly deliveries from RVFB. Our volunteers made 31,000 deliveries possible to households, helping our food bank have the largest home delivery program in Seattle.
We're looking for more volunteers to lend a hand by packing grocery bags for our Home Delivery program. No training is required, but you must be able to lift grocery bags up to 30 pounds independently. Join us on Wednesdays from 8 to 11 AM and Thursdays from 8 AM to 12 PM to support our mission to nourish, empower, and serve our community.
The Seattle Times: "As more of our neighbors go hungry, WA lawmakers must do better"
Marcia Wright Soika of FamilyWorks and Seattle Food Committee, and Jim Wigfall of Sound Generations, are urging legislators to protect Washingtonians from hunger by prioritizing investments in meals for kids and seniors, food banks for all, and stretching SNAP.
In 2024, visits to food banks rose 26% in Washington State with 13.4 million visits, a major increase from the 2014-2022 average of 8.2 million. Food banks are often known as places to access free groceries when budgets are tight. While food is the undercurrent of our work, it's also the catalyst for connection that thrives in our organization.
Food banks are essential for families with young children, seniors on fixed incomes, and workers facing high living costs. Many guests find opportunities to socialize while grocery shopping, picking up meals, or receiving home deliveries. Supporting food banks ensures our neighbors have access to nourishment through food and community. By donating, volunteering, or advocating, you contribute to operating our food bank and our vision of a hunger-free South Seattle.
Folks from the Gates Foundation shared a meal with Gloria, our Executive Director, and Dan, one of our board members, made by chef Becky Selengut.
