Our new Major Gifts Coordinator, Yohannes Berhane, who recently moved to Washington, joined a few of our staff members in Olympia to attend Hunger Action Day, where they met with legislators and advocated for policies that support a hunger-free Washington. Here's what Yohannes shared after attending Hunger Action Day for the first time:
"As someone who recently moved to Seattle and is new to the work of sustaining food security, this was an incredibly valuable event. The church auditorium was full of community members from all over the state advocating for a hunger-free Washington. We had the chance to meet with representatives and speak up for policies like a statewide food security plan, protecting funding for food assistance and basic needs programs, and many other critical bills."
"This was a great introduction to advocacy in Washington, it'll shape how I engage with community members and elected officials and allows me to have even more urgency in my work with Rainier Valley Food Bank. I’m grateful to be part of a network of people who aren’t only passionate about, but are taking action in securing access to nutritious food for all.”
Our team also learned more about key state-level issues that are affecting the status of food security for all Washingtonians, including the decline in the number of farmers and Washington's projected $3 billion budget deficit.
Our Executive Director, Gloria Hatcher-Mays, reflects on hunger, uncertainty, the power of community, and what continues to carry us forward as so many families continue to be impacted. Read the story here!
