Food insecurity is increasingly experienced by marginalized communities. Our food bank is located in a diverse neighborhood. Black, Indigenous, and other people of color make up 70.9% of our community, compared to making up 37.8% of the city’s population. Food insecurity is highest among Black adults (29.8%), nearly three times the county average. Black families face more food insecurity compared to other communities because they're more likely to experience poverty. Specific concerns include racism and discrimination, low wages and unemployment, and food deserts.
This Black History Month, we want to remind our Black community members that they can seek support at our food bank. RVFB proudly partners with black-led organizations such as Urban League of Metropolitain Seattle to provide nourishing, culturally relevant foods and resources for families, and we'll continue advocating for marginalized groups of all identities and backgrounds. Along with support, we also want to honor the history of Black people. You can visit Hey Black Seattle for more resources or find events at Visit Seattle.
Warm up with Pho Ga, a Vietnamese Chicken Noodle Soup recipe with Ginger Dipping Sauce, from The Pantry!
