Through the Eyes of a Volunteer: Liza's Story

We appreciate our volunteers' eagerness, support, and help towards ending hunger in South Seattle. One of our volunteers, Liza, shared her story of how she went from volunteering with her parents to volunteering by herself as our food bank transitioned to our current location and back to in-person shopping.

LGBTQ+ History Month

Many people celebrate Pride Month, but there's also LGBTQ+ History Month in October. From the 1960s through the 80s, Seattle activists politically organized around same-sex intimacy, nondiscrimination, and transgender inclusion. While there's been much progress, the community still faces challenges. Between 2018 and 2020, 19% of LGBTQ+ people in Seattle reported not having enough food.

Seattle has many resources for LGBTQ+ folks, such as mental health and gender affirming care, food, housing, and youth support. Visit the Seattle LGBTQ+ Database, provided by Seattle's LGBTQ+ Center, for more information on services.

ADHD Awareness Month

Attention Deficient Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder. It's commonly diagnosed in children but also seen in adults with persistent symptoms of inattention and/or hyperactivity and impulsivity. While studies are limited, there is a possible connection between childhood experience of food insecurity increasing symptoms of ADHD that continues to adulthood.

In October, ADHD Awareness Month highlights the shared experiences of the ADHD community and strives to educate people about the frequently misunderstood disorder.

For more information on ADHD, view the CDC's Fact Sheet. For those with ADHD, you can find support groups in King County on Psychology Today.
